Cracks within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) appear to be widening after Sharad Pawar praised Eknath Shinde. Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray is reportedly unhappy with Pawar’s gesture. Pawar felicitated Shinde with the ‘Mahadji Shinde Rashtra Gaurav Puraskar’. Pawar complimented Shinde’s inclusive approach to governance. This event has stirred political discussions in Maharashtra.
Aakhir Tak – In Depth
A potential rift within the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has surfaced after NCP founder Sharad Pawar praised Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde for his work. Sources indicate that Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray is not pleased with Pawar’s actions. This Sharad Pawar praise of Shinde has raised eyebrows within the MVA alliance.
On Tuesday, Pawar, the head of the NCP (SP) faction, awarded Shinde the ‘Mahadji Shinde Rashtra Gaurav Puraskar’ during the 98th All India Marathi Literary Conference, an event Pawar chairs.
In his address, the 84-year-old Pawar lauded Shinde’s inclusive approach to governance and development. He expressed his satisfaction that someone from his home district of Satara had become the Chief Minister. Pawar’s action highlights potential friction within the MVA.
However, Thackeray is reportedly unhappy with Pawar, suggesting he should have refrained from attending the event. Sources claim that this gesture was not well-received by the Shiv Sena (UBT), hinting at a growing rift within the MVA. Leaders within Shiv Sena (UBT) are expressing their displeasure over this event.
This isn’t the first instance of Sharad Pawar commending opponents beyond the political arena. Last month, Pawar surprisingly credited the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for the BJP’s significant victory in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections. Maharashtra politics is often characterized by unexpected moves.
According to sources, Pawar attributed the BJP’s success in winning 132 out of 149 contested seats to the RSS’s methodology and aggressive Hindutva campaign.
The BJP-led Mahayuti coalition secured a landslide victory in Maharashtra, winning 230 out of the 288 seats. The Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s NCP secured 57 and 41 seats, respectively. The MVA secured 46 seats, with the Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) getting 20, the Congress 16, and the NCP (SP) 10.
Shinde Praises Pawar in Return
At the award ceremony on Tuesday, Shinde reciprocated the praise, stating that one could learn from the 84-year-old Pawar on how to maintain positive relationships with leaders across the political spectrum.
He recalled that Pawar was the son-in-law of Sadashiv Shinde, a renowned spin bowler celebrated for his googly deliveries. Drawing a cricket analogy, Shinde hoped that Pawar “would not bowl him a googly in the future”. Shinde acknowledged Pawar’s political acumen.
“Pawar also bowls googly deliveries that are tough to decipher. I have good relations with Pawar, but he has not bowled me a googly. I am confident that he will not bowl me a googly in the future either,” he stated.
The Shiv Sena chief emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah were steadfastly supporting Maharashtra, ensuring development initiatives in the state within a short span of two-and-a-half years. He added that Pawar himself had witnessed the development efforts in Maharashtra.
