The killing of Hezbollah commander Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli airstrike has led to a political storm, with People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti facing sharp criticism from the BJP for halting her election campaign in solidarity with the “martyr.”
Mufti’s announcement came shortly after Nasrallah’s death in Beirut. On Saturday night, Mufti posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Cancelling my campaign tomorrow (Sunday) in solidarity with the martyrs of Lebanon & Gaza, especially Hassan Nasrallah. We stand with the people of Palestine & Lebanon in this hour of immense grief & exemplary resistance.”
The BJP did not hold back its criticism. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, at an election rally in Sonipat, Haryana, said that the opposition INDIA bloc, to which the PDP belongs, was prioritizing foreign issues over the welfare of Indians. He stated, “There is a war going on between Israel and Palestine. The Israeli army killed Hezbollah commander Hassan Nasrallah, which is their issue. But here in Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti says she will not campaign because Nasrallah was killed. I want to ask Mehbooba, Farooq Abdullah, and Rahul Gandhi: When terrorists kill Hindu soldiers, do you feel sad?”
BJP spokesperson RP Singh criticized Mufti further, accusing her of being “pro-militant.” Singh remarked, “By cancelling her campaign, Mehbooba Mufti is shedding tears for terrorists. She had also wept for Burhan Wani in the past.” He alleged that the INDIA bloc was engaging in vote-bank politics.
Senior BJP leader Kavinder Gupta accused Mufti of “crocodile tears” for terrorists. He questioned her silence on the killings of Hindus in Bangladesh and Pakistan.
Mehbooba Mufti’s daughter, Iltija Mufti, defended her mother’s stance, arguing that Nasrallah was a defender of Palestinian rights. “Nasrallah stood up for the people of Gaza and protested against their oppression. People should have the right to express their protests,” she said.
Following Nasrallah’s death, protests erupted in Kashmir, where demonstrators raised black flags and anti-Israel slogans in Srinagar and Budgam. Meanwhile, Bajrang Dal announced its plans to protest against Mehbooba Mufti, accusing her of aligning with anti-India forces.
