Following the success of the Ingenuity helicopter, which arrived on Mars attached to the Perseverance rover in February 2021, NASA has set plans in motion for a second Mars helicopter mission. Ingenuity exceeded expectations, completing 72 flights in nearly three years and proving that controlled flight is possible in Mars’ thin atmosphere. Originally designed for only five flights within 30 days, Ingenuity paved the way for more advanced aerial research, motivating NASA to develop new helicopter designs capable of expanded scientific research on Mars.
Under NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Mars Science Helicopter (MSH) project, engineers are testing new rotor designs that can carry science payloads ranging from 0.5 to 2 kilograms. The new carbon fiber rotors are about 4 inches longer than Ingenuity’s blades and are capable of spinning at near-supersonic speeds of 3,500 rpm, allowing for more capable and resilient aircraft.
