Manipur Drone Attack Leaves 2 Dead, Several Injured: Curfew Imposed in Imphal West
The violence in Manipur escalated on Sunday when suspected Kuki militants used drones to launch an attack, killing two people and injuring several others. The incident occurred in the low-lying valley areas of Koutruk and Kadangband in the Imphal West district, where militants fired indiscriminately from hilltop positions.
Fatalities and Injuries Reported
Among the deceased was 33-year-old Surbala Devi from Phayeng Umang Leikai. She was rushed to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Hospital in Imphal, but was declared dead on arrival. Her 13-year-old daughter, Ng Rojiya, was also injured and is receiving treatment for a right-hand injury at the same hospital.
The attack also left three other individuals injured: 30-year-old police officer N Robert, 26-year-old Inao Takhellambam, and 19-year-old Thadoi Heigrujam. They sustained various injuries and were taken to local hospitals for treatment.
Curfew Imposed and Government Response
Following the attack, the local administration imposed a curfew in Imphal West district to prevent further violence. The Manipur government condemned the incident, describing it as an act of terror by Kuki militants who used high-tech drones, bombs, and sophisticated weapons against unarmed villagers.
A statement released by the Manipur home ministry expressed the government’s commitment to restoring peace in the region. It emphasized that the attack was a severe violation of the ongoing efforts to bring normalcy to the state. “Such an act of terrorizing unarmed villagers is viewed very seriously by the state government,” the statement read.
The N Biren Singh government has assured that immediate action is being taken to control the situation and punish those responsible for the attack.
Police Statement on the Use of Drones
Manipur Police described the attack as a “huge escalation,” citing the use of high-tech drones normally seen in warfare. A statement posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, detailed how militants employed RPGs and drones to deploy explosives against civilians and security forces. The involvement of trained professionals with technical expertise is suspected, and authorities are monitoring the situation closely.
Increased Vigilance and Joint Operations
Senior police officials have been directed to remain vigilant, especially in fringe areas, to prevent further attacks. The Manipur DGP, Rajini Singh, has ordered maximum alertness among deployed forces and instructed them to conduct joint combing operations to avoid any untoward incidents.
