A significant rift has reportedly surfaced between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew, Trinamool Congress’s General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, over the transfer of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The conflict stems from the controversial handling of the transfer following protests triggered by the rape and murder of a trainee doctor.

Abhishek Banerjee, who has been notably distant from the controversy, did not participate in his aunt’s rallies demanding swift CBI action. Sources close to him indicate that he is upset with the immediate suspension of Dr. Ghosh and his subsequent favorable posting at Calcutta National Medical College. Abhishek believes that Mamata Banerjee, despite her clean image, did not take strong enough action against the alleged corrupt practices at RG Kar Medical College.

The rift deepened when a doctors’ clique, believed to be close to Mamata Banerjee, was accused of supporting Dr. Ghosh. This group has come under social media scrutiny for alleged corruption, with Abhishek reportedly feeling that a more ruthless approach was necessary to maintain the party’s image.

On August 14, when miscreants attacked the hospital, Abhishek Banerjee immediately contacted the Police Commissioner, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. This swift action contrasted with his aunt’s measured response.

Mamata Banerjee, on the other hand, has blamed the factional feud on Santanu Sen, a former Rajya Sabha MP close to Abhishek Banerjee. She removed Sen from the NRS Hospital’s patients’ committee and his role as the party’s spokesperson. She has also questioned her nephew’s lack of active involvement in the crisis, suggesting he should participate in rallies and demonstrate more responsibility.

As the Supreme Court hearing on the trainee doctor’s rape-murder case continues, Mamata Banerjee has taken control of media relations, sidelining Abhishek’s media team. Despite these differences, Mamata remains the central figure in managing the crisis.

In mid-September, Abhishek Banerjee is expected to leave for New York for eye surgery, adding another layer of complexity to the unfolding political drama.

This internal conflict is reminiscent of past political rifts within the CPI-M regime, where disagreements between leaders like Jyoti Basu and Promod Dasgupta were famous. Today, a similar rift is visible between the government’s Nabanna headquarters and Abhishek’s office at Camac Street.

Background of the Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: The case that sparked the controversy involves a second-year postgraduate trainee doctor found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The incident led to nationwide protests demanding justice and better safety for doctors. Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, has been arrested in connection with the case, which is now being handled by the CBI.

The Supreme Court recently criticized the West Bengal government for its handling of the case, particularly the delay in filing an FIR, further intensifying the scrutiny on the state administration.
