Sharad Pawar has ruled out the need for the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) to announce a chief ministerial candidate ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly election. He emphasized that the coalition, which includes the Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress, and NCP, would contest under collective leadership. This stance comes amid ongoing discussions within the alliance, particularly with the Shiv Sena (UBT) pitching for Uddhav Thackeray as the CM face.
Pawar pointed out that the chief minister would be determined based on which party wins the most seats in the elections. “There is no hurdle anywhere by not announcing the CM’s face. No need to think about it now. The leadership should be decided according to the numbers,” Pawar stated, adding that historical examples support this approach.
Citing the post-Emergency period when Morarji Desai was announced as the Prime Minister only after the Lok Sabha polls, Pawar explained that the focus should remain on winning the people’s support. “We will sit together and give a stable government after the elections,” he said.
The tussle over the chief ministerial candidate has placed the MVA in a complex situation. Earlier, sources indicated that the Shiv Sena (UBT) was pushing for Uddhav Thackeray to be declared as the chief ministerial candidate, while the Congress had proposed making him the campaign chief. Last month, Uddhav Thackeray expressed his willingness to support any candidate endorsed by Congress and NCP, showcasing his commitment to unity within the alliance.
Thackeray, who had to step down as Maharashtra’s Chief Minister following internal strife within his party in 2022, has continued to play a prominent role within the MVA. His recent statements reflect his adaptability and readiness to support the coalition’s collective decisions.
As Maharashtra gears up for the Assembly elections, the MVA’s strategy of collective leadership could be a significant factor in the political landscape, emphasizing unity over individual ambitions.
