Aakhir Tak – In Depth
The Mumbai Police have faced significant obstacles in securing the custody of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, currently lodged in Sabarmati Central Jail in Gujarat. Despite multiple attempts, an order by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has prevented his transfer. Bishnoi’s name surfaced in high-profile cases, including the shooting incident outside Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s residence in April this year.
Recently, Bishnoi’s gang claimed responsibility for the murder of former Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Baba Siddique. The Mumbai Police arrested shooters who confessed to being part of the Bishnoi gang, and they are now investigating Bishnoi’s direct involvement.
A key challenge for the Mumbai Police is the Home Ministry’s order, initially set to expire in August 2024 but now reportedly extended, preventing Bishnoi’s transfer from Sabarmati Jail. Bishnoi was shifted to Sabarmati Jail from Delhi’s Tihar Jail in August 2023 over cross-border drug smuggling charges. He also claimed responsibility for Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala’s assassination.
Though Bishnoi remains incarcerated, his gang continues operations under the leadership of his brother Anmol Bishnoi and international accomplices Goldy Brar and Rohit Godar. According to the NIA chargesheet, their network is growing at an alarming rate, similar to Dawood Ibrahim’s empire in the 1990s.
