Woman Molested in Kolkata Hotel Party; 2 Arrested

A shocking incident occurred at a renowned five-star hotel in Kolkata on Tuesday night, where a woman was allegedly molested during a party. The police have arrested two individuals, Arun Kumar, a 60-year-old resident of Delhi, and Rinku Gupta, a 43-year-old Kolkata native, in connection with the case.

The woman, who has lodged a complaint, reported that the molestation took place around 11:50 PM. According to her account, the accused men touched her and her sister inappropriately and threatened them with dire consequences. Arun Kumar, who was staying at the hotel, had invited Rinku Gupta to the party, where the incident occurred.

This unfortunate event coincides with the West Bengal Assembly’s recent passage of the Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) Bill, 2024. This legislation, passed unanimously, proposes severe penalties for rape, including the death penalty if the victim dies or is left in a vegetative state. The bill marks a significant step as West Bengal becomes the first state to amend central laws related to rape and sexual crimes.

The new law comes amid widespread outrage over the recent brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The legislative move is seen as a strong response to the growing demands for stricter laws to protect women and children from sexual violence.
