Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav’s recent remarks about infighting within the Uttar Pradesh BJP prompted a sharp response from Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Tuesday. Yadav had alleged that internal politics within the BJP was hampering its administration in Uttar Pradesh, citing a purported rift between Maurya and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
In a detailed rebuttal, Keshav Prasad Maurya emphasized the BJP’s organizational strength and governance both in the state and at the Centre. He also dismissed Akhilesh Yadav’s claims, stating that the return of Samajwadi Party’s “hooliganism” in Uttar Pradesh was impossible. Yadav’s allegations included accusations that the BJP’s internal strife had led to hasty and ill-considered decisions, particularly concerning recent administrative measures.
Akhilesh Yadav alleged that the BJP government was plagued by internal conflict, which had resulted in poor governance. He cited the government’s decision regarding teachers as an example, arguing that it had been forced to backtrack due to internal disagreements. Yadav stated, “This government is fighting among themselves. Their decisions are hasty. The decision regarding teachers has forced them onto the back foot. This decision should not just be postponed but completely cancelled. They have dismantled the entire administration in their fight for power.”
He further commented on the administrative issues, saying, “The Chief Minister himself is admitting that there is corruption. Their own MLAs are now speaking out openly. The BJP wants to stand by its defeated candidates. They have become weak. The public is suffering in the fight for the chair between the Deputy Chief Minister and the Chief Minister.”
Maurya’s response came after a meeting with BJP chief JP Nadda on Tuesday, amid rumors of his rift with Yogi Adityanath. This meeting followed the BJP’s setback in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, where the INDIA alliance of the Samajwadi Party and the Congress won 43 of the state’s 80 Lok Sabha seats, while the BJP-led NDA secured 36 seats, a significant drop from the 64 seats it had won in 2019.
During the BJP’s UP working committee meeting on July 14, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath attributed the electoral reverses to “over-confidence.” At the same meeting, Keshav Prasad Maurya emphasized that the “organization was bigger than the government” and expressed confidence in the party’s victory in the 2027 assembly polls.
Akhilesh Yadav, seizing on these internal dynamics, criticized the ruling government, calling it “weak” and suggesting that the administration was ineffective due to infighting. In response, Keshav Prasad Maurya reiterated the BJP’s stability and accused the Samajwadi Party’s PDA (Pichda, Dalit, and Alpasankhyak) of being a “fraud.”
Maurya confidently predicted that the BJP would replicate its 2017 success in the 2027 assembly elections, underscoring the party’s commitment to maintaining strong governance despite internal challenges.
