Aakhir Tak – In Depth
The BJP is heading for a huge victory in Delhi, poised to end the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) decade-long rule and marking its first return to power in the capital after 27 years. Amid the political shake-up, an old video of Arvind Kejriwal declaring that the BJP could never defeat AAP in this lifetime has resurfaced. The Delhi Election result has been surprising.
Addressing party workers in 2023, Arvind Kejriwal had alleged that the liquor policy case, in which top leaders were arrested, was a conspiracy by the BJP. Arvind Kejriwal had made this big statement.
“Narendra Modi ji wants to form a government in Delhi this way; they know they can’t defeat us through elections,” he had said. “I want to tell Narendra Modi ji that you cannot defeat us in this life, and you will have to take another birth to defeat us in Delhi.”
Less than two years later, the BJP has not only proven the AAP supremo wrong but also unseated him from his New Delhi constituency. Kejriwal, who has held the seat since 2013, lost to ex-MP Parvesh Verma by 4,089 votes.
Another old clip of Kejriwal is also making the rounds. During a 2017 Delhi Assembly session, the then Chief Minister had asserted,”Hum Dilli ke maalik hai (we are Delhi’s masters). Ye log humare order ko manenge, hum Dilli chalanyenge (We’ll run Delhi, they will follow our orders).” Arvind Kejriwal’s old statements are going viral.
The combative remark, made against the backdrop of bitter tussling with the Lt General over his powers and authority, drew cheers from AAP legislators. Today, his party is staring at electoral decimation.
AAP’S RISE AND FALL
AAP came to power in 2013, ousting the Congress and ending Sheila Dikshit’s 15-year rule. After a brief 49-day stint, Kejriwal resigned, blaming political conspiracies. But in 2015, AAP made a spectacular comeback, winning 67 of 70 seats. It repeated its dominance in 2020 with 62 seats.
However, after two consecutive terms, AAP could no longer pin governance failures on others. The BJP capitalised on rising anti-incumbency, hammering AAP over unfulfilled promises, worsening infrastructure, and Delhi’s pollution crisis.
The saffron party’s campaign, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, used sharp messaging, including catchphrases like ‘AAPda’ (disaster) against AAP. Focusing on local issues—air pollution, traffic, urban housing, sanitation, and public safety—the BJP struck a chord with voters.
Meanwhile, AAP was embroiled in corruption probes, with Kejriwal, his second-in-command Manish Sisodia, and MP Sanjay Singh arrested in the excise policy case. The leadership crisis left AAP struggling to govern effectively.
With Kejriwal’s defeat and the party’s ouster in Delhi, AAP’s national ambitions are in jeopardy.
