Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant called the appointment “temporary,” suggesting that if Qassem follows his predecessors, his tenure could be brief. Israel echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that lasting peace in Lebanon requires dismantling Hezbollah’s military framework.

Qassem’s leadership comes amid turbulence for Hezbollah, especially following the deaths of Nasrallah and another prominent figure, Hashem Safieddine. Since his appointment, Qassem has made several televised addresses, including one in support of ceasefire efforts in Lebanon. Appointed deputy chief in 1991, Qassem lacks the charisma attributed to Nasrallah, which some believe may impact his ability to unify the group in challenging times.
