Israel has claimed responsibility for killing a top intelligence commander of Hezbollah, Hassan Khalil Yassin, in an airstrike on Saturday in the southern suburbs of Beirut. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that Yassin was leading a unit within Hezbollah’s intelligence division, tasked with identifying military and civilian targets within Israel.
The military claimed that Yassin had been working closely with Hezbollah’s missile and drone units and was personally involved in planning and executing terror plots against both civilians and soldiers. His death follows the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli airstrike on Beirut earlier in the day.
The IDF confirmed Nasrallah’s death, stating, “Hassan Nasrallah will no longer be able to terrorize the world.” Following Nasrallah’s death, protests erupted in Iran, with demonstrators holding portraits of the slain Hezbollah leader and chanting slogans like “Revenge,” “Down with Israel,” and “Down with the US.” Iran has called for an urgent UN Security Council meeting as tensions between Hezbollah and Israel dramatically escalate.
Soon after Israel announced Nasrallah’s killing, air raid sirens blared across several parts of Israel. A projectile fired from Lebanon landed in an Israel-occupied West Bank area, but no injuries were reported. Sirens also went off on the outskirts of Jerusalem, which the Israeli military attributed to “a launch from Lebanon towards Israeli territory.”
Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, described Nasrallah’s death as a “historic turning point,” claiming the country had “settled its account” with a mass murderer responsible for the deaths of “countless Israelis” as well as American and French citizens.
Meanwhile, Lebanon’s health ministry reported that Israeli strikes on Saturday resulted in the deaths of 33 people and injuries to 195 others. Over the past two weeks, more than 1,000 people have been killed, and 6,000 wounded by Israeli attacks, while approximately one million Lebanese have been displaced due to the ongoing conflict.
