Israel Strikes Lebanon in Response to Hezbollah’s 300 Rocket Barrage

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has reached a new peak as Israeli forces conducted extensive airstrikes in Lebanon in response to Hezbollah’s aggressive rocket attacks. On Sunday, the Israeli military launched a significant operation involving around 100 fighter jets, targeting Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon. This preemptive strike was initiated to neutralize what Israel identified as an imminent threat from the Iran-backed militant group, Hezbollah.

Hezbollah responded fiercely, launching more than 320 Katyusha rockets towards Israeli territory. The group claimed that its attack was in retaliation for the killing of its military commander, Fuad Shukr. In its statement, Hezbollah mentioned targeting specific military sites in Israel, including the Iron Dome platforms. The group further asserted that the first phase of its operations was a “complete success.”

In the wake of these developments, Israel’s Defence Minister Yoav Gallant declared a state of emergency for the next 48 hours. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during a high-level meeting, reiterated Israel’s commitment to defending its citizens. “We will do everything to protect our country,” Netanyahu stated. The Israeli military confirmed that its airstrikes destroyed numerous Hezbollah rocket launchers and other strategic positions.

Amidst this escalating conflict, the United States expressed its concern. White House National Security Council spokesperson Sean Savett indicated that President Joe Biden is closely monitoring the situation. The US has affirmed its support for Israel’s right to self-defense while urging for regional stability.

In response to these developments, Israel’s Defence Minister held discussions with his American counterpart, Lloyd Austin, emphasizing the precision and necessity of the airstrikes in Lebanon.

Israel’s stance has been clear, with the IDF labeling the strikes as a defensive measure against an immediate threat. Residents of southern Lebanon were warned to evacuate as Israeli jets targeted Hezbollah positions. The situation remains tense as both sides brace for potential further escalation.
