Israel Identifies Six Hostages Murdered by Hamas in Gaza
Israel’s military has reported the recovery of six hostages’ bodies from a tunnel in southern Gaza, believed to have been murdered by Hamas shortly before their discovery. This tragic update was confirmed by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) on Sunday.
The victims—Carmel Gat, Eden Yerushalmi, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Alexander Lobanov, Almog Sarusi, and Ori Danino—were taken by Hamas during their attack on Israel on October 7. Their bodies were brought to Israel, where the IDF disclosed the grim details.
Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari of the IDF stated, “According to our initial estimation, these individuals were brutally murdered by Hamas terrorists shortly before we reached them.”
The news follows the recent rescue of another Israeli hostage, 52-year-old Qaid Farhan Alkadi, from a separate underground tunnel in Gaza. US President Joe Biden, who has been closely monitoring the situation, expressed profound sorrow and outrage. In a White House statement, Biden confirmed that one of the deceased was Israeli-American Hersh Goldberg-Polin.
“I am devastated and outraged,” Biden said, emphasizing his calls for an end to the Gaza conflict and expressing cautious optimism about ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire and the release of hostages.
The Goldberg-Polin family also issued a statement, mourning the loss of Hersh. They thanked supporters and requested privacy during this difficult time.
The discovery has sparked widespread criticism of the Israeli government. Hostage Forum, a prominent activist group, accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of abandoning the hostages, calling for nationwide protests. Opposition leader Yair Lapid criticized Netanyahu for focusing on minor issues while hostages remain in peril.
In the broader context, the Palestinian Ministry of Health reports that the conflict has resulted in 40,691 deaths and 94,060 injuries in Gaza since October 7. This escalation began when Hamas launched a deadly attack on Israel, resulting in approximately 1,200 Israeli casualties and around 250 hostages.
