Iran has vowed to avenge the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, calling an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. The Lebanese Health Ministry reported that 33 people were killed and 195 others were injured in fresh Israeli strikes in Lebanon over the past 24 hours. These strikes have resulted in over 1,000 deaths and more than 6,000 injuries in just two weeks.
Following Nasrallah’s killing, a projectile was fired from Lebanon into the Israeli-occupied West Bank, causing a fire but no injuries. Air raid sirens were also sounded in the outskirts of Jerusalem and the West Bank, triggered by “a launch from Lebanon toward Israeli territory,” according to the Israeli military.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described Nasrallah’s assassination as a “historic turning point.” He stated that Nasrallah, responsible for the deaths of countless Israelis, Americans, and French citizens, had finally faced justice.
The Lebanese Health Ministry confirmed that 33 people were killed and 195 others were wounded in Israeli airstrikes on Saturday. Over 1,000 people have died, and nearly one million Lebanese have been displaced due to these strikes.
In Iran, thousands of protesters took to the streets, carrying portraits of Nasrallah and chanting slogans like “Revenge,” “Down with Israel,” and “Down with the US.” Images of these demonstrations were shared widely, reflecting the anger against Israel’s actions in Lebanon.
Celebrations erupted in Syria following Nasrallah’s death, as Hezbollah, which supported Syrian President Bashar al-Assad during the civil war, is viewed as an enemy by many. Hezbollah’s involvement in Syria led to the death of thousands of Syrians, with 50,000 Hezbollah fighters aiding Assad’s regime.
Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed responsibility for the death of top Hezbollah commander Hassan Khalil Yassin in an airstrike in Beirut’s Dahiyeh suburb. Yassin was a high-ranking member of Hezbollah’s intelligence division, which was responsible for identifying Israeli military and civilian targets.
Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has reportedly been moved to a secure location following Nasrallah’s assassination.
In response to Nasrallah’s death, Lebanon has declared a three-day mourning period. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu reiterated that Nasrallah was a “mass murderer” and his death was “a significant milestone” in ensuring justice for countless victims.
US President Joe Biden referred to Nasrallah’s death as “a measure of justice” for his many victims, including Americans, Israelis, and Lebanese civilians. However, he also urged an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon, emphasizing the need to prevent further escalation of violence. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy echoed these sentiments after discussions with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, stressing the need for an immediate ceasefire to end the bloodshed.
