Aakhir Tak – In Depth
India’s government rejected allegations from Canada involving a senior leader in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Cabinet, calling them “absurd and baseless.” On Saturday, the Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that these claims lacked any foundation and appeared politically motivated. To address this, a Canadian High Commission official was summoned on Friday and given a formal protest note. Indian authorities highlighted that such accusations could impact bilateral relations and are seen as an attempt to create unnecessary diplomatic tensions between the two nations.
During a press conference today, Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, stated, “In response to the recent developments involving Canada, we summoned a representative from the Canadian High Commission yesterday. In our official note, we expressed the Government of India’s strong objection to the unfounded and baseless remarks made about the Union Home Minister of India by Deputy Minister David Morrison before the Committee.”
Two senior officials from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government recently admitted to leaking intelligence and sensitive information about India to The Washington Post. This occurred before Canadian police publicly claimed that their investigation into the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar had uncovered links between Indian government agents and “homicides and violent acts” in Canada. On Tuesday, Deputy Foreign Minister David Morrison informed a parliamentary panel that a senior official from Prime Minister Modi’s government was allegedly involved in plans targeting Sikh separatists in Canada.
The Indian government rejected these allegations, stating that the claims were an attempt to discredit India and “influence other nations.”
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) added, “The revelation that high-ranking Canadian officials intentionally leak baseless insinuations to international media as part of a strategic effort to tarnish India’s image and sway other nations reinforces the long-standing view of the Indian government regarding the current Canadian administration’s political agenda and behavior.”
Relations between India and Canada have deteriorated since the Canadian government’s accusations linking Indian agents to Nijjar’s killing last year.
“Such reckless actions will have serious repercussions for bilateral relations,” the Indian government warned on Saturday.
