Rodrigues Challenges India to Bounce Back from New Zealand Loss
After a setback in the T20 World Cup, the Indian team must recover strongly for their semi-final prospects
The Indian women’s cricket team faces the challenge of bouncing back after their T20 World Cup upset against New Zealand. Jemimah Rodrigues emphasizes that this not only reflects the character of the team but also significantly impacts their semi-final prospects. This scenario unfolded when New Zealand defeated India by 58 runs in Dubai on Friday.
Chasing a target of 161 runs, India was bowled out for just 102 runs. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur scored only 15 runs, and only five batters reached double figures. New Zealand’s bowlers, Rosemary Mair and Lea Tahuhu, dismantled India’s batting lineup with impressive performances.
Rodrigues stated, “Today is a game we would like to forget. This is a World Cup, and we need to keep moving on. We can’t stay stuck at this game; we must pick ourselves up, and I think that will show the character of this team.”
India needs to take every game seriously moving forward. She added, “We know every game from here is crucial. We have to take it one game at a time and ensure we do our job well. If we do that, I believe we can play our best cricket.”
New Zealand established their victory with a 67-run opening partnership, with captain Sophie Devine scoring 57 runs from 36 balls.
Rodrigues mentioned, “We created opportunities, but unfortunately, we didn’t capitalize. We need to take positives from this game and a lot of learnings as we move forward.”
Regarding the hot conditions in Dubai, Rodrigues commented, “We have enough time to adapt to the conditions. We must do our job and win matches for the team. We’re quite used to such conditions.”
A controversial moment occurred when India attempted to run out Amelia Kerr. Rodrigues reflected, “We did our best, but we had to accept the umpire’s decision and move on.”
