Congress Urges Government to Take Opposition Into Confidence Amid India-Canada Row

As diplomatic tensions between India and Canada continue to rise, the Congress Party has urged the Indian government to take leaders of the Opposition into confidence and clarify its stance on the escalating situation. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, calling on the government to be transparent regarding allegations made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Ramesh stated, “The Indian National Congress has already asked the Prime Minister to take the Leaders of Opposition in both Houses of Parliament into confidence, considering the worsening India-Canada relations.” He highlighted that this issue could also strain India’s relations with other countries, particularly the United States, and damage Brand India internationally.

The Congress leader emphasized that the government needs to provide a clear response to protect India’s international standing. He added that matters of national security and foreign policy require a united approach.

This plea came after Trudeau accused India of involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India firmly rejected the allegations, labeling them “baseless.”

As the situation escalated, India recalled its High Commissioner from Ottawa, while Canada expelled six Indian diplomats. In retaliation, India also expelled six Canadian diplomats, deepening the diplomatic row between the two nations.

Congress’s call is for the government to involve the Opposition in critical national security decisions, ensuring unity in defending India’s image on the global stage.
