Himachal Pradesh’s Rural Development Minister and Congress leader Anirudh Singh sparked a heated debate after alleging that a mosque in Shimla’s Sanjauli area was built illegally. The minister demanded an investigation into the mosque’s construction, claiming it caused social unrest in the region. His remarks were met with opposition from fellow Congress MLAs, who distanced themselves from his stance.
Speaking in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly, Singh highlighted that the mosque’s construction had led to increased tensions in Sanjauli. He questioned whether the necessary permissions were obtained before the mosque was built, accusing those involved of engaging in illegal activities. According to Singh, the mosque was originally a single-floor structure, but additional floors were later constructed without approval.
The minister stated, “They have a habit of engaging in illegal activities. They built a five-story mosque. This entire matter should be investigated.” His comments have fueled protests from local Hindu organizations, which have held demonstrations against the mosque’s construction.
Singh also raised concerns about the rise in thefts and issues like love jihad in the Sanjauli market area. “It has become difficult for women to walk in the market, and thefts are increasing. Love jihad is another serious issue that needs attention,” Singh said, prompting strong reactions from fellow MLAs.
Opposition from Party MLAs
Congress MLA Harish Janartha countered Singh’s claims, asserting that there was no tension in the area and that the mosque was initially built before 1960. He acknowledged that three additional floors were added illegally in 2010 but emphasized that the land belongs to the Waqf Board. Janartha criticized certain groups for escalating the situation, stating that illegally constructed toilets at the site had already been demolished.
Other ministers, including Jagat Negi and Vikramaditya Singh, refrained from taking a firm stand on the issue. Negi noted that he lacked sufficient information, while Vikramaditya Singh urged that the issue not be politicized, stressing the importance of inclusivity and lawfulness. He remarked, “Our state is Devbhoomi (Land of the Gods). Politics should not be played in the name of religion.”
Chief Minister’s Response
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu addressed the controversy, emphasizing that the state respects all religions and warning against any unlawful actions. He stated, “People of all religions are respected in the state. Strict action will be taken against those who take the law into their own hands.” Sukhu reiterated that a peaceful resolution would be sought, with the government committed to maintaining law and order.
Political Reactions
The issue attracted national attention, with AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi criticizing Congress for its stance. Sharing a video of Singh’s speech, Owaisi questioned whether the Himachal government was being run by the BJP or Congress, stating, “There is only hatred in Himachal’s ‘Mohabbat ki Dukaan’.” Former Chief Minister and BJP leader Jai Ram Thakur also weighed in, calling the mosque’s construction illegal and demanding appropriate action.
The debate over the Sanjauli mosque has highlighted deep divisions within the Congress party, as leaders struggle to balance community sentiments and legal considerations. With investigations ongoing, the controversy continues to stir political and social tensions in Himachal Pradesh.
