The National Commission for Women (NCW) has urged the Kerala government to release the full Hema Committee Report, following explosive revelations about workplace harassment and gender discrimination in the Malayalam film industry, commonly referred to as Mollywood. The report has already caused a major stir, highlighting how women face numerous challenges, including exploitation and harassment at the workplace.
The Hema Committee, chaired by Justice K Hema, was formed to investigate the working conditions of women in the Malayalam film industry. The report is based on testimonies from 51 industry professionals and sheds light on the pervasive exploitation of women. Key findings include the prevalence of the casting couch, a lack of basic amenities, and systemic discrimination against women.
The committee’s findings reveal that harassment often starts early in a woman’s career. Many women reported being asked to “compromise” or “adjust”—terms commonly understood as euphemisms for sexual favors—in order to secure roles. The report further details how production controllers or those offering roles often make inappropriate demands, creating an unsafe environment for women.
One of the most concerning aspects is the denial of basic human rights on set. The report states that women frequently lack access to proper toilets and changing rooms, forcing them to find secluded spots to change clothes or use the bathroom during outdoor shoots, often without access to water or other basic facilities. These conditions highlight the severe gender-based discrimination prevalent in the industry.
In response, the NCW has demanded that the full Hema Committee Report be made public, arguing that only parts of it are currently available. The Commission stated that it observed “concern findings” in the report, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability within the industry to ensure a safer working environment for women.
NCW’s demand for the full release of the report comes amid growing calls for reform within Mollywood. The #MeToo movement in India has amplified these demands, pushing for more stringent policies against harassment and exploitation. The Commission has committed to working with authorities to address these issues and ensure that women’s rights are upheld within the industry.
With the Kerala government partially releasing the report under the RTI Act, several critical pages were redacted, which has drawn criticism from activists and industry professionals alike. The NCW’s insistence on full transparency is seen as a crucial step toward addressing these long-standing issues.
The Hema Committee Report is a stark reminder of the challenges women face in the entertainment industry. It highlights the urgent need for systemic changes to create a safe and equitable environment for all professionals, particularly women who have long been marginalized and exploited.
