Farooq Abdullah Urges Peace in Jammu & Kashmir Without Troops
Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Farooq Abdullah, has emphasized the need for peace in the region without the deployment of armed troops. His comments come ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, where the issue of statehood remains a significant point of contention.
During an exclusive interview, Abdullah questioned the Centre’s claim that normalcy has returned to Jammu and Kashmir. He pointed out the heavy presence of security forces on the streets, challenging the notion that this represents genuine peace. “Peace should be without these troops around,” he asserted, underscoring his belief that peace cannot coexist with a military presence.
As elections approach, Abdullah has been vocal about the need to restore full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. He criticized the role of the Union Territory’s current administration, led by Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, stating, “I want full statehood. Immediately. Why should we be under the Viceroy of Delhi? He can order anything. He can change anything.”
Abdullah further argued that the BJP-led Union government has marginalized Jammu and Kashmir by reducing its status to a Union Territory, a move unprecedented in India’s history. He highlighted the government’s failure to control terrorism even after Article 370’s abrogation, challenging the narrative that the article was the root cause of terrorism in the region.
The former chief minister also voiced concerns over the BJP’s efforts to divide the country along religious lines. “They are trying to separate people on a religious basis,” Abdullah warned, stressing the need for unity.
Regarding Omar Abdullah’s decision to contest from two seats in the upcoming Assembly elections, Farooq Abdullah likened the situation to navigating through a storm, stating, “To change the situation, we must actively participate in the elections. It’s like being in a storm — you can’t steer the boat from the shore; you have to be in the boat, navigating through the storm.”
As Jammu and Kashmir head towards Assembly elections, Abdullah’s call for peace without military presence and the restoration of statehood continue to resonate strongly among the region’s population.
