Drunk Patient and Relatives Assault Woman Doctor at Mumbai’s Sion Hospital
In a shocking incident at Mumbai’s Sion Hospital, a woman doctor was allegedly assaulted by a patient and his relatives, all of whom were reportedly in an intoxicated state. The patient, who had sustained facial injuries and was bleeding from his hands, came to the hospital for treatment during the early hours of Sunday. What began as a routine medical procedure quickly escalated into a violent confrontation, leaving the doctor with minor injuries and prompting a police investigation.
The incident occurred around 3:30 am when the doctor was on duty in the ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) department. The patient, accompanied by 7-8 relatives, was already agitated when he arrived at the hospital, following a physical altercation prior to seeking medical help. As the doctor carefully peeled away the cotton dressing from the patient’s wounds to inspect them, the patient winced in pain and began verbally abusing her. His relatives, rather than calming the situation, joined in the abuse, and the confrontation quickly turned physical.
According to Dr. Akshay More, a junior resident doctor and General Secretary of Sion-MARD (Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors), “The patient arrived in an intoxicated state with his relatives. He had injury marks on his face and was given an ENT reference around 3:30 am. Our on-call resident doctor in the ENT department, a female, was performing a routine examination when the patient started verbally abusing her. The situation escalated rapidly as the patient’s relatives also began to abuse and physically assault the doctor.”
As the confrontation intensified, the patient and his relatives fled the hospital, leaving the doctor with minor bruises. The assaulted doctor promptly reported the incident to the police at around 7 am, leading to the filing of a First Information Report (FIR).
This incident has further fueled concerns over the safety of healthcare professionals, particularly in light of recent nationwide protests by doctors following the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a state-run hospital in Kolkata. The medical community has been vocal about the need for better protection and stricter laws to safeguard doctors from such violent attacks.
