The Supreme Court on Monday directed protesting resident doctors to resume work by 5 pm on Tuesday, stating that no adverse action would be taken against them upon resumption of duties. However, the junior doctors defied the order, declaring that they would continue their “cease work” protest until their demands were met and justice was served for the rape and murder victim at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The top court issued this directive following an assurance from the West Bengal government that no punitive actions, including transfers, would be taken against the doctors once they resumed work. Despite this, the doctors remain steadfast in their protest.
“We will continue the cease work as our demands have not been fulfilled. We asked the state government to remove the Kolkata Police Commissioner, the health secretary, the director of health services, and the director of medical education by 5 pm. We are open to discussion,” said one of the agitating doctors.
The junior doctors began their protest on August 9, hours after the body of a female post-graduate trainee was found in the seminar room of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
