With winter approaching, the Delhi government is intensifying its efforts to combat the city’s air pollution. Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai recently led a high-level meeting involving key stakeholders to devise an effective strategy.
The proposed measures include implementing the odd-even formula for vehicles, promoting work from home for employees, encouraging electric vehicles (EVs), and restricting the burning of biomass. The meeting saw participation from various experts and organizations such as the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), UNEP, EPIC India, and others. One of the top recommendations from the meeting was to consider artificial rain as a potential solution.
Key suggestions from the meeting included:
- Increased awareness among citizens.
- Implementation of work from home earlier in the season.
- Provision of heaters for security guards to reduce biomass burning.
- Scheduling artificial rain between November 1 and 15.
A letter will be sent to the Union Environment Minister to propose a meeting with relevant departments about artificial rain. Gopal Rai stated that the upcoming Winter Action Plan will incorporate these suggestions and focus on 14 key areas. These areas include dust pollution, vehicular emissions, stubble burning, garbage burning, industrial pollution, and more.
A review meeting is scheduled for September 5 to develop a joint action plan involving all concerned departments. The aim is to assign specific tasks based on the Winter Action Plan’s focus points and enhance Delhi’s air quality through targeted actions.
