Court Slams ‘Freebies Culture’, Raps Delhi Civic Body Over Coaching Centre Deaths
The Delhi High Court has sharply criticized the Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) over the deaths of three civil service aspirants who drowned in a coaching centre basement. The court has directed the MCD to clear all encroachments on drains in the Rajinder Nagar area by Friday.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The deaths occurred when heavy rains caused severe flooding in Old Rajinder Nagar, resulting in the basement of a coaching centre being inundated. The court, expressing frustration over the lack of planning and inadequate drainage, hinted at the possibility of transferring the investigation to a central agency.
Criticism of ‘Freebies Culture’ and Civic Authorities
In its remarks, the court linked the tragedy to a broader issue of ‘freebies culture,’ suggesting that the lack of tax collection has contributed to inadequate infrastructure and planning. The court criticized the MCD for allowing multi-storey buildings without proper drainage and highlighted its financial difficulties.
The Delhi Minister Atishi also noted that encroachments by coaching centres had exacerbated the flood situation. The High Court is set to continue its review of the case on Friday, focusing on the roles and responsibilities of the involved authorities.
