On November 8, 2024, India’s Chief Justice DY Chandrachud marked his last working day. In his farewell, Chandrachud reflected on his judicial journey, expressing gratitude to everyone who played a role in it. He emotionally stated, “If I ever hurt anyone unintentionally, I ask for forgiveness.” His words moved everyone present in the courtroom.
Chandrachud viewed his tenure as a pilgrimage and noted, “We are here to work as pilgrims, and our efforts either resolve or progress cases.”
His colleagues and senior members of the judiciary honored him with deep respect. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta remarked, “For the government, we won some and lost many, but we always had the chance to present our perspective.”
His successor, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, mentioned that while his path would be eased by Chandrachud’s reforms, he would miss his guidance.
Justice Chandrachud ensured that a humane approach to justice remained prevalent, leaving a legacy that the Indian judiciary will cherish.
