At least 17 Palestinians, including women and children, lost their lives in a recent Israeli airstrike on the town of Zawayda in central Gaza, according to local health officials. The strike, which occurred on Saturday, also left dozens injured, intensifying the already dire situation in the region. The Israeli military has stated that the attack targeted locations from which Hamas militants had been firing rockets.
The majority of the victims belonged to the same family, highlighting the devastating impact of the strike. Among the dead were eight children and four women, all of whom were reportedly asleep when the missiles struck. A neighbor, Abu Ahmed Hassan, described the scene, stating, “They were asleep in their beds, kids and babies, then three missiles targeted their place.” The owner of the house was known as a merchant, and there were no signs of military activities in the area, according to Hassan.
In response, the Israeli military claimed that their strikes were aimed at militant targets from where rockets had been launched. However, the incident is currently under review. The military has also issued evacuation orders for parts of central Gaza, including the Maghazi district near Zawayda. These instructions were posted in Arabic on social media platforms, urging residents to relocate to designated humanitarian zones due to ongoing militant activities.
Reports indicate that thousands of residents are now fleeing the Maghazi district following these orders. The evacuation orders are part of a broader strategy by Israel to clear areas of potential militant activity. On Friday, similar orders were given for sections of Khan Younis, a city in southern Gaza, where militants were reportedly launching rockets. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), these orders have affected approximately 170,000 displaced individuals.
The ongoing conflict has led to widespread displacement across Gaza, with most of the 2.3 million residents forced to leave their homes due to the 10-month-long Israeli offensive. The Israeli military claims that its operations have resulted in the deaths of dozens of militants, including those responsible for rocket attacks on Israeli forces.
Ceasefire negotiations in Doha, mediated by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt, have temporarily paused, with talks expected to resume next week. US President Joe Biden emphasized the importance of not undermining efforts to reach a ceasefire and secure the release of hostages. However, he also cautioned that the negotiations were “far from over.”
The conflict, which began on October 7 following a deadly attack by Hamas that killed 1,200 people and led to the capture of around 250 hostages, has escalated into a full-scale war. According to Gaza health authorities, over 40,000 Palestinians have been killed, with the majority being civilians. Israel reports that it has lost 330 soldiers, with at least a third of the Palestinian casualties being fighters.
