CBI Rules Out Gang-Rape in Kolkata Murder Case: Accused Acted Alone
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a charge sheet against Sanjay Roy, the prime accused in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, ruling out the possibility of gang rape.
According to the charge sheet submitted to a special court in Kolkata, Roy, who worked as a civic volunteer with the local police, committed the crime alone on August 9. The incident took place while the victim was resting in the seminar room during a break.
The charge sheet does not include gang-rape charges, indicating that Roy acted alone, officials said. However, the CBI has kept the investigation open for further developments.
Sanjay Roy, 33, initially confessed to the crime after being arrested on August 10. However, he later retracted his confession during a polygraph test, claiming that he was being framed and maintained his innocence.
Roy was arrested by Kolkata Police a day after the body of the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was found in the seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College. A Bluetooth device found near the doctor’s body linked Roy to the crime, and CCTV footage captured him on the third floor of the hospital, where the seminar room is located.
The accused was reportedly close to a few senior officers of the Kolkata Police. Earlier, the CBI had informed the Supreme Court that the crime scene had been tampered with before the agency took over the investigation, suggesting a potential cover-up by local authorities.
On August 13, the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the investigation from the Kolkata Police to the CBI.
