Aakhir Tak – In Depth:
Canada’s National Security and Intelligence Advisor Nathalie Drouin admitted on Tuesday to leaking sensitive information against India to the Washington Post. This leak, she clarified, was a part of a “communications strategy” to present Canada’s perspective on the diplomatic dispute with India in American media. Drouin stated that the leak occurred without Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s approval and did not contain any “classified” content.
Diplomatic ties between India and Canada have deteriorated significantly. Recently, India expelled six Canadian diplomats, accusing Canadian officials of mishandling intelligence leaks. These actions follow accusations linking Indian agents to the killing of Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada, which India has consistently denied, calling them baseless. India has also criticized Canada for its lack of action against pro-Khalistan groups.
Conservative members of Canada’s parliament questioned why the Canadian public wasn’t informed directly and why the information was shared with a foreign newspaper. Analysts suggest this leak could have lasting repercussions on India-Canada relations.
