Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s conflict with India is linked to his political challenges. The foreign interference commission has identified China as the primary threat to Canada’s elections. Is Trudeau attempting to make India the fall guy to shield China?
Aakhir Tak – In Depth
A panel investigating foreign interference in Canadian elections has identified China as the biggest threat in 2019 and 2021. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has testified before this panel amid rising discontent within his Liberal Party. His government has taken Canada-India relations to a new low by naming Indian diplomats, including the Indian High Commissioner, as “persons of interest” in the investigation surrounding the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
The preliminary report highlighted attempts by China, Russia, Iran, India, and Pakistan to influence election outcomes. However, it also concluded that the interference did not affect the election results.
Trudeau initially resisted setting up the Foreign Interference Commission, but mounting evidence and media leaks compelled him to do so. The report states that Trudeau and his officials tended to minimize intelligence reports regarding foreign meddling in Canadian affairs.
China is viewed as the largest threat to Canada’s democratic institutions. Yet, the Trudeau government has shifted its focus towards India. On Monday, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Commissioner accused Indian officials of “interference in democratic processes.”
As Trudeau testifies, the renewed accusations against India over the killing of a Khalistani terrorist raise questions about whether this is a diversionary tactic to shield China.
