Aakhir Tak – In Depth
Canada-Based Khalistanis Behind Shaurya Chakra Awardee Sandhu’s 2020 Murder
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has disclosed in its affidavit to the Supreme Court that operatives of the banned Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) based in Canada orchestrated the murder of Shaurya Chakra awardee and teacher Balwinder Singh Sandhu in 2020. The revelation comes amid strained ties between Canada and India over the investigation into the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Balwinder Singh Sandhu was shot dead outside his house in Bhikhiwind, Tarn Taran district, Punjab, in October 2020. He was honored with the Shaurya Chakra for his valiant fight against militancy in Punjab during the 1990s. According to the NIA, Canadian KLF operatives Sunny Toronto and Lakhveer Singh plotted the murder to reignite the Khalistani movement in India. They aimed to target individuals who opposed their ideology, seeking to polarize Punjab society along communal lines.
The affidavit further revealed that the accused contacted radicalized youth in Punjab to execute their plan. Both Sunny Toronto and Lakhveer Singh have been named in the NIA chargesheet as absconding accused. The NIA asserts that this conspiracy aimed to revive terrorism in Punjab, focusing on eliminating anti-Khalistan figures.
The KLF leadership believes that by targeting key individuals, they can reignite separatist sentiments and fuel further unrest in India, specifically in Punjab. The murder of Sandhu was part of a larger strategy to polarize the region and instigate communal tension.
