Brij Bhushan Takes a Dig at Vinesh Phogat, Accuses Her of Cheating at Olympics
In a controversial statement, former BJP MP and Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Singh accused Olympic wrestler Vinesh Phogat of cheating to participate in the Olympics. Singh alleged that Phogat’s lack of success at the games was a form of divine punishment.
Singh questioned, “Can a player give trials in two weight categories in one day? Can trials be paused for five hours after the weigh-in?” He asserted that Phogat did not win a medal because she allegedly cheated her way into the games.
The statement came shortly after Phogat was named the Congress candidate for the Haryana Assembly election from Julana. Singh’s allegations were further extended to Bajrang Punia, another prominent wrestler who led protests against Singh, accusing him of participating in the Asian Games without completing the required trials.
Singh criticized Phogat and Punia for allegedly halting wrestling activities in Haryana for nearly two and a half years. He said, “Haryana is the crown of India in sports, yet Bajrang Punia went to the Asian Games without trials. I want to question those experts who stand by this behavior.”
Phogat and Punia, who spearheaded the protest against Singh over sexual harassment allegations last year, recently joined Congress. Phogat will contest the elections, while Punia has been appointed as the working chairman of the All India Kisan Congress.
Continuing his attack, Singh claimed he is innocent of the allegations against him, stating, “If anyone has disrespected our daughters, it is Vinesh and Bajrang. And the one who wrote the script, Bhupinder Hooda, is responsible.”
Singh further mentioned his readiness to campaign for the BJP in Haryana if required, stating that any BJP candidate would defeat Phogat in the elections.
Phogat, after joining Congress, criticized the BJP for allegedly backing Singh during the protests. “When we were dragged on the roads in Delhi, Congress stood by us, while BJP supported Singh,” Phogat said.
Echoing Phogat’s sentiments, Punia stated, “During our struggles, Congress supported us, and we felt abandoned by BJP.”
BJP leaders have dismissed the wrestlers’ protests as a politically motivated move orchestrated by Congress to target the BJP.
