Aakhir Tak – In Depth:
In response to a series of hoax bomb threats issued to flights, the Indian government came down hard on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) for failing to provide user details, calling it “abetting crime.” A virtual meeting was held by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology with airlines and social media companies X and Meta, where the central government expressed its concerns.
Over the past eight days, bomb threats have disrupted over 90 flights from airlines including Akasa, Air India, IndiGo, and Vistara. Despite efforts, Delhi Police faced difficulties in tracing details about certain X accounts linked to these threats. Three specific accounts, namely @adamlanza111, @psychotichuman, and @schizobomer777, were found posting alarming messages to flights, and the accounts were later suspended.
The first case was filed on October 16 after an Akasa Air flight received a threat via X. Authorities suspect that the accounts were set up using VPNs or dark web browsers, making it difficult to track down the perpetrators. Legislative action is being planned to deal with such threats, including the possibility of placing the offenders on a no-fly list.
