In a powerful opening speech at the Democratic National Convention, U.S. President Joe Biden launched a direct attack on Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, labeling him a “loser.” The 81-year-old President strongly defended America’s current trajectory, stating, “Donald Trump calls America a failing nation. He says we’re losing. He’s the loser—he’s dead wrong.”
Biden emphasized that America is “winning” and that the world is “better off for it,” countering Trump’s criticisms on issues such as crime and immigration. He reiterated his disdain for Trump’s controversial “suckers and losers” comment regarding soldiers, questioning, “Who in the hell does he think he is? Who does he think he is? These are the words of a person NOT worthy of being Commander in Chief. Period. Not then. Not now. And not ever.”
The President also used the platform to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for the 2024 presidential elections, highlighting her leadership and dedication to the country. He expressed his confidence in Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, stating they are best prepared to continue the progress achieved under his administration.
Biden’s speech was met with overwhelming support from the convention crowd, who gave him a four-minute standing ovation. Addressing them, he asked, “Are you ready to vote for freedom? Are you ready to vote for democracy and for America? Let me ask you, are you ready to elect Kamala Harris and Tim Walz?”
Reflecting on his administration’s accomplishments, Biden proudly stated, “Because of you, we’ve had the most extraordinary four years of progress ever, period.” He shared the credit for these successes with Harris, emphasizing their partnership.
The speech also touched on the ongoing issues of racism and white supremacy in the U.S., with Biden firmly stating there is no place for these ideologies in the country. Visibly emotional, he wiped away tears as the crowd chanted “Thank you, Joe.”
Kamala Harris made an unannounced appearance onstage before Biden’s speech, expressing gratitude for his leadership and service to the nation. “Joe, thank you for your historic leadership, for your lifetime of service to our nation, and for all you’ll continue to do,” Harris said, setting the tone for her official acceptance of the Democratic nomination later in the week.
Joe Biden’s decision to step back from the presidential race in July was influenced by concerns over his age and performance, with Democratic leaders worried about his ability to defeat Trump in the upcoming elections. Harris’s candidacy, however, has significantly boosted the Democratic Party’s prospects, with opinion polls showing a surge in support for her.
According to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, about 48% of U.S. adults have a favorable view of Harris, up from 39% earlier in the summer. This positive shift has fueled optimism within the Democratic Party as they head towards the November elections.
Biden, who served as Vice President under Barack Obama, the U.S.’s first Black President, is now urging Democrats to rally behind Harris. If successful, Harris would make history as the first female president of the United States.
