Bengal: High Court Approves RSS Rally, Setback for Mamata Government
The Calcutta High Court on Friday granted permission to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to hold a rally in West Bengal, instructing that “the sound should be kept low.” The order followed the RSS moving the High Court after the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government denied them permission to use the public address system at Sarsanghchalak Bhagwat’s public meeting in Burdwan. The RSS rally had been the subject of much controversy in the state.
The court stated that the rally should be conducted in a way that does not inconvenience examinees and that the sound is kept to a minimum level. Mohan Bhagwat’s Jan Sabha is scheduled for February 16. The court decision came as welcome news to supporters of the RSS rally.
The district administration had earlier denied permission for the use of a microphone in the said public meeting, citing the ongoing Madhyamik examinations in the state. The state government’s concerns were centered on the disruption of exams.
Justice Amrita Sinha said that since it is a Sunday and the event will last only 1 hour and 15 minutes, the court does not think that it will cause inconvenience to anyone. It has been ordered to be conducted peacefully and the sound should be kept as low as possible. The future of the RSS rally was uncertain until this ruling.
The High Court’s ruling represents a significant setback for the state government, which had denied permission to use the public address system or loudspeakers at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) grounds. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) government cited the ongoing Class 10 board examinations in the state as the reason for denying permission. The government’s initial denial of the RSS rally sparked debate.
This decision by the High Court clears the path for the RSS rally to proceed. All eyes are now on this rally. The court also directed the administration to ensure that there is no disturbance during the rally. Instructions were given to the administration to conduct the rally peacefully. This RSS rally is expected to attract a large crowd.
