The Bengal Bandh, called by the BJP for a 12-hour statewide strike, led to partial disruptions across West Bengal as people protested against police actions during a march to the state secretariat ‘Nabanna.’ This march was held in response to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata.
While Kolkata witnessed fewer buses and cabs on the road, the bandh turned violent in some parts, such as Bhatpara in North 24 Parganas. BJP leader Priyangu Pandey claimed that TMC supporters fired on his car in Bhatpara. Meanwhile, clashes between Trinamool and BJP workers were reported in Nadia and Munshi Bazar. BJP leader Arjun Singh stated that “Priyangu Pandey’s car was attacked, and the driver was shot. Seven rounds of firing were witnessed, resulting in two injuries.”
Railway services were significantly disrupted as BJP workers staged demonstrations at various locations. An Eastern Railway official reported that tracks were blocked at 49 places under its jurisdiction, with the Sealdah south section being the worst affected.
To control the situation, heavy police deployment was seen on the streets. Seven BJP workers were detained at Shyambazar metro station in Kolkata while attempting to shut its gates forcibly. In north Bengal, state-run bus drivers wore helmets for protection. A driver from the North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC) stated, “We are wearing helmets because of the bandh. The department provided them for safety.”
Further north, BJP activists blocked roads at Nandigram in Purba Medinipur, disrupting traffic. Similar demonstrations were held at the Bankura town bus stand. In Bhabanipur, BJP MLA Agnimitra Pal criticized the police, urging citizens to refrain from using vehicles, stating, “Police have invalidated Supreme Court orders and used water cannons mixed with chemicals on protestors.”
The Bengal government mandated all government offices to remain open, with a warning of a show-cause notice for absentee employees. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee dedicated the foundation day of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad to the memory of the 31-year-old trainee doctor who was raped and murdered.
Large-scale violence erupted in Kolkata during a ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ protest march demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, leading to over 200 arrests across the state.
