Bangladesh Police Hiding Amid Rising Unrest: Ground Report
In a dramatic turn of events, Bangladesh’s army is now guarding police personnel who have sought refuge inside a police station in Meharpur, near the India-Bangladesh border. This comes in the wake of heightened tensions following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation as Prime Minister and her subsequent flight to India on August 5.
The turmoil has left many police stations, including those in Dhaka, vulnerable to vandalism, looting, and arson by enraged protesters. As a result, numerous police officers have been forced to go into hiding, unable to safely report for duty. The unrest was initially sparked by student protests against a controversial job quota system, which quickly escalated into a broader anti-government movement.
The situation in Meharpur is particularly tense. The Bangladesh army is stationed outside a local police station, providing protection to officers who are taking refuge inside. The area has experienced significant unrest, including the burning of several Hindu-owned homes.
Despite the efforts of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, who has assumed the role of chief adviser to the interim government, to restore order, many police officers remain in hiding due to ongoing threats of violence. Yunus has appealed to officers to resume their duties, but his call has largely gone unheeded.
Since Sheikh Hasina’s departure from Dhaka, reports indicate that at least 205 attacks on minority communities have occurred across 52 districts. The violence has predominantly targeted Hindu properties, with numerous homes and businesses being looted and set on fire.
As the crisis unfolds, Muhammad Yunus plans to meet with Hindu students and community leaders to address the targeted attacks and discuss solutions to the ongoing violence.
