Hindu Teachers Targeted: Forced Resignations in Bangladesh

The persecution of Hindu teachers in Bangladesh has escalated, with nearly 50 academicians forced to resign from government jobs since August 5. This disturbing trend reflects the growing hostility against minorities in Bangladesh, particularly following the downfall of the Sheikh Hasina government.

Since early August, a wave of assaults and targeted attacks has resulted in the forced resignation of at least 50 Hindu educators. India Today accessed a list of affected teachers, but sources suggest that the actual number could be much higher.

One of the most shocking incidents involved Shukla Rani Halder, the principal of Bakerganj Government College in Barishal. On August 29, Halder faced a mob of students and outsiders who stormed her office, demanding her resignation. Under immense pressure and intimidation, she eventually wrote her resignation on a blank piece of paper.

On August 18, a similar incident occurred at Azimpur Government Girls’ School and College, where principal Geetanjali Barua, assistant head teacher Gautam Chandra Paul, and physical education teacher Shahnaza Akhter were cornered by students who demanded their resignations. Barua recounted to the Daily Star that before August 18, there were no calls for her resignation, but that morning changed everything as students stormed her office, leading to public humiliation.

Across Bangladesh, visuals circulating on social media depict educators and administrators coerced into signing resignation letters amidst chants and jeers. The situation has created an atmosphere of fear and insecurity among Hindu teachers, with many feeling increasingly helpless.

Shanjay Kumar Mukharjee, an Associate Professor at Kabi Nazrul University, expressed his distress, stating, “I was forced to resign from the post of Proctor and Head of the department. We are very vulnerable at this time.”

The Bangladesh Chhatra Oikya Parishad, a student wing of the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikya Parishad, condemned the rising intolerance against the Hindu community in a press conference. They highlighted the growing dangers faced by minorities under the current environment.

Exiled author Taslima Nasreen criticized the military-backed government led by Muhammad Yunus, accusing it of failing to protect minority communities. She pointed out the rampant violence, saying, “In Bangladesh, teachers are forced to resign. Journalists, ministers, and officials of the former government are harassed, imprisoned, or worse. The government remains silent.”

These incidents underline a deepening crisis for Hindu educators in Bangladesh, raising international concern over the treatment of minorities in the country.
