Aakhir Tak – In Depth
A senior Bangladeshi military official with close ties to Pakistan has been placed under surveillance for allegedly plotting a coup in the Army, sources told India Today. The order was issued by Army Chief Waker-Uz-Zaman after he received intelligence regarding moves by Lieutenant General Faizur Rahman, a Quarter Master General (QMG), to replace him. This coup plot has sent shockwaves through the Bangladesh government and military establishment.
The move comes after the Chief’s secretariat was alerted to meetings being convened by Lt Gen Faizur Rahman, a known Jamaat sympathiser, without his knowledge. The Bangladesh Army is now investigating the matter.
Sources indicated that these meetings with divisional commanders were intended to gather support against the acting Chief of the Bangladesh Army. However, he failed to garner sufficient support. Lt General Faizur Rahman reportedly called a meeting of key divisional commanders (GOCs) in the first week of March. However, the Army Chief’s secretariat discovered the meeting, and a warning was issued to the top officials. Subsequently, the top officials withdrew from the crucial meeting, thwarting the coup plot.
In the first two months of 2025, Lt General Faizur Rahman allegedly held several meetings with Jamaat leaders and Pakistani diplomats. The Bangladesh Army Chief was informed about these meetings, prompting him to exercise caution and place the general under surveillance. This is considered a matter of national security for Bangladesh.
The development occurs amidst ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, characterized by a surge in violence, vandalism, and rioting over the past few months.
Recent protests have resulted in the vandalization of properties linked to deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s family, including the Dhaka residence of her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Last month, Army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman attributed the political turmoil to the rapidly deteriorating law and order situation in the country. He also emphasized the need for unity and discipline within the armed forces.
“The anarchy we have witnessed is of our own making,” the Army chief stated at an event. This highlights the internal challenges Bangladesh faces. The alleged coup plot adds another layer of complexity to the already volatile situation in Bangladesh.
