The government of Bangladesh formally lodged a protest against India’s Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday, following his remarks about Bangladeshi nationals during a recent speech in Jharkhand. Bangladesh expressed deep concern over the comments, calling them “highly deplorable” and urged India to exercise caution in such statements made by political leaders.
Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs handed over a formal protest note to India’s Deputy High Commissioner in Dhaka, expressing the country’s “serious reservations, deep hurt, and extreme displeasure.” Amit Shah, while addressing a public rally in Jharkhand, declared that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) “will hang every Bangladeshi infiltrator upside down to teach them a lesson” if they come to power in the state.
According to a report by the Dhaka Tribune, Bangladesh has requested the Indian government to caution its political leaders from making such “objectionable and unacceptable” remarks. The protest note emphasized, “Such comments from responsible figures undermine the spirit of mutual respect and understanding between two friendly nations.”
The protest note further highlighted that remarks made by political leaders from such influential positions not only affect the citizens of a neighboring country but also strain the longstanding diplomatic ties between Bangladesh and India.
Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs underscored the damage that such statements could cause to the harmony and cooperation between the two countries, which share deep bilateral ties in areas such as trade, security, and culture. The ministry stressed that such comments are not only unacceptable but also contrary to the diplomatic principles that both countries uphold.
There has been no immediate comment from India’s Deputy High Commissioner regarding the protest. However, diplomatic observers are closely monitoring the situation to see how the two nations address this issue moving forward.
Given the strong historical and friendly relations between India and Bangladesh, this diplomatic exchange will be critical in maintaining regional stability. The coming days will reveal whether further negotiations are necessary to address the tensions raised by this issue.
