On Wednesday, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) alleged that Chief Minister Atishi’s belongings were forcibly removed from her official residence at 6, Flagstaff Road, following an order by Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) VK Saxena. According to AAP, the move is part of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) plan to seize the Chief Minister’s residence.
The Delhi CMO issued a statement accusing the BJP of using their influence through the LG to forcibly vacate the premises and reassign it to a BJP leader. “The BJP has been out of power in Delhi for 27 years, and now they are allegedly trying to gain control of the CM’s residence due to their failure in securing electoral support,” said senior AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh.
Visuals from outside 6, Flagstaff Road showed several cartons and belongings being moved out of the residence, while a Public Works Department (PWD) team arrived to take charge.
Earlier in the day, Singh accused BJP leaders of influencing officials to prevent the allocation of the bungalow to Atishi. AAP also claimed that there was a plan to allot the property to a prominent BJP leader.
According to sources from the LG’s office, 6 Flagstaff Road is not officially designated as the Chief Minister’s residence. Instead, it falls under the PWD, which reclaims and reassesses government properties once vacated.
Former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal did not hand over the property to the PWD after vacating it, which raised concerns about potential ulterior motives. Atishi briefly moved her belongings into the bungalow without formal allocation. The PWD will reassign the property once its procedures are complete.
Earlier this week, Atishi shifted to 6 Flagstaff Road after Arvind Kejriwal vacated the premises. However, Delhi BJP Chief Virendra Sachdeva claimed in a video message that the residence had been “sealed” and raised suspicions about what secrets Kejriwal may have hidden there.
Sachdeva stated, “You made a spectacle with two small trucks of belongings, but everyone knows that the bungalow is still under your control. It’s unconstitutional for you to try and hand over the property to Atishi when she already has an assigned residence.”
Arvind Kejriwal, who resigned as Chief Minister in September, officially vacated his residence last Friday. He has now relocated to 5, Ferozeshah Road near Mandi House, a property previously allotted to AAP Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab, Ashok Mittal.
