The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched a precise airstrike on Hezbollah’s main headquarters in Beirut, Lebanon, aiming to eliminate the group’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah. This latest assault marks a significant escalation in the ongoing Israel-Hezbollah conflict. According to Reuters, citing an Axios report, Nasrallah was inside the building during the strike, although his status remains unconfirmed.
IDF Spokesperson Daniel Hagari confirmed the attack, stating that the Israeli military destroyed several buildings in a bid to neutralize Hezbollah’s central command. At least two people were killed, and dozens more were wounded, as reported by Lebanon’s health ministry. A Hezbollah source, however, claimed Nasrallah survived the attack.
Hezbollah’s Al-Manar television reported that four buildings were obliterated in the assault. The explosion was so powerful that it shook homes and rattled windows up to 30 kilometers north of Beirut, according to reports from the AP news agency.
Iran’s Tasnim news agency also reported that Nasrallah was unharmed, though a senior Iranian security official told Reuters that Tehran is working to verify his condition.
In light of the escalating violence, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has cut short his trip to New York and is returning to Israel. Earlier at the UN General Assembly, Netanyahu emphasized, “As long as Hezbollah chooses war, Israel will exercise its right to eliminate this threat and bring our people home safely.”
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah intensified after the destruction of Hezbollah’s communication devices and walkie-talkies in a previous incident. Hezbollah retaliated by launching rockets into Israel, sparking a deadly confrontation that has, in just one week, claimed over 700 lives and displaced more than 30,000 people.
