Omar Abdullah on Afzal Guru’s Hanging: No Purpose Served
National Conference leader Omar Abdullah recently made strong remarks regarding the execution of 2001 Parliament attack convict, Afzal Guru. He stated that the hanging “served no purpose,” highlighting his opposition to capital punishment and questioning the judicial process that led to the execution.
Speaking with ANI, Abdullah emphasized that the Jammu and Kashmir government at the time had no role in approving the execution. “The Jammu and Kashmir government had nothing to do with Afzal Guru’s execution. If it were up to us, the state government’s permission would not have been forthcoming,” he clarified.
Abdullah, the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, also underscored his stance against capital punishment. “I don’t believe in the infallibility of courts. Evidence has shown us time and time again, perhaps not in India but in other countries, that you can execute someone and later find out you were wrong,” he added.
Afzal Guru was executed at Delhi’s Tihar Jail on February 9, 2013, for his role in the December 13, 2001, attack on Parliament House. His burial took place within the jail premises, which sparked controversy and debates, particularly in the Kashmir region.
Abdullah’s statements come ahead of the first Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370. He has filed nominations from two seats, Ganderbal and Budgam, expressing hope to win both and restore the respect and rights taken from the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Union Territory is set to go to polls in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1, with results scheduled for October 8.
Abdullah’s candid and critical remarks on a sensitive issue like Afzal Guru’s execution highlight ongoing tensions and debates about justice and governance in the region. His comments are expected to influence voters as the elections approach, reflecting his firm stance on controversial issues.
