The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) is set to approve significant projects for the Indian Navy and Army, worth over ₹1.3 lakh crore. This approval, expected during the meeting scheduled for Tuesday, includes the Navy’s ₹70,000-crore Project 17 Bravo, which aims to build seven advanced warships. Mazagon Dockyards Limited (MDL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) are the main contenders for this project, both currently involved in constructing frigates under Project 17A (Nilgiri class).
MDL is responsible for four frigates, while GRSE is building three. However, other shipyards in Category 1 may also participate in the tender. There is a strong possibility that the project will be split between two shipyards, with the lowest bidder likely securing four warships and the second bidder getting three.
Additionally, the Indian Army’s proposal for a ₹50,000-crore project to acquire 1,700 future-ready combat vehicles to replace the ageing T-72 tanks will also be discussed. This acquisition is crucial for the Army, which operates in high altitudes and deserts, as it seeks to modernise its fleet of armoured vehicles, including tanks and infantry combat vehicles. The modernisation of the Army’s fleet is expected to enhance its operational readiness and combat capabilities significantly.
The Defence Ministry’s focus on upgrading the Navy and Army’s capabilities reflects India’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its defence sector. The approval of these projects will not only bolster India’s naval and land forces but also contribute to the nation’s strategic interests in the region.
