Severe Rain Causes Flooding and Disruptions in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh

Heavy rainfall has wreaked havoc across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, resulting in severe flooding, disrupted train services, and the closure of schools in Hyderabad. The Telugu states are bracing for more rain in the coming days.

In Andhra Pradesh, the downpour has led to severe flooding and landslides. At least eight people have been killed in rain-related incidents. Five of the victims died in landslides in Mogalrajapuram, Vijayawada, where heavy rain caused large boulders to crash onto houses. In Guntur district, a teacher and two students lost their lives when their car was swept away by an overflowing stream.

The flooding has submerged low-lying areas, affecting road traffic and disrupting normal life. Train services on key routes, including Vijayawada-Warangal and Vijayawada-Khammam, have been halted due to waterlogged tracks and overflowing streams.

The Central Water Commission (CWC) has issued a warning about potential swelling of rivers in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana over the next two days. In response, the Andhra Pradesh government has established a state-level control room to coordinate rescue and relief efforts. In Hyderabad, all primary and secondary schools have been closed as a precautionary measure. The state Chief Secretary has called for an evacuation plan and relief camp setup in flood-affected areas.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has been actively monitoring the situation, directing officials to release Rs 3 crore to each district for relief measures. Similarly, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has instructed officials to remain vigilant and coordinate relief operations.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that the depression in the Bay of Bengal has moved across north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha, continuing its northwestward trajectory. Heavy rain is expected to persist, causing further disruptions.
