Smriti Irani on Amethi Defeat: Polls Will Come and Go, but My Real Win is…

BJP leader Smriti Irani said she is not disheartened by her defeat in the Lok Sabha polls, as Amethi represents an “emotive and ideological issue” for her. Despite being praised as a giant-slayer after defeating Rahul Gandhi in 2019, Irani faced a significant loss in 2024 to Kishori Lal Sharma, a Gandhi family loyalist.

“I am not bothered about my loss from Amethi. Even BJP stalwart Atal Bihari Vajpayee lost elections. Only Narendra Modi has not been defeated so far. I have also lost elections before, when I contested in 2004 from Chandni Chowk and in 2014,” Irani shared in a podcast.

She emphasized, “Elections will come and go. My real win is that 1 lakh families now live in their own homes, 80,000 houses are electrified, and two lakh families received gas cylinders for the first time.”

Smriti Irani, who previously served as Union Minister, highlighted her efforts in Amethi, stating that she ensured the constituency was not neglected and even bought a house there. Her comments seem to be a veiled criticism of Rahul Gandhi, who won the Amethi seat three times consecutively.

Recalling her initial challenge in Amethi, she said, “On March 22, 2014, I received a call from Rajnath Singh at 11 pm that I have to go to Amethi and contest from there. I did not crib about it and took the challenge head-on.”

“When I arrived, I found 40 villages where no roads were constructed post-Independence. In the last five years, I have built homes for one lakh families, 3.5 lakh toilets, and connected 4 lakh people to the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme. Around two lakh families received gas cylinders for the first time,” she said.

Irani was defeated by KL Sharma by over 1.6 lakh votes — three times the margin she achieved while defeating Rahul Gandhi in 2019.

When asked about being projected as BJP’s chief ministerial candidate for Delhi, Irani sidestepped the question, stating, “It has always been a privilege to serve the people. I have been an MP thrice, served as the head of several departments, and held multiple roles within the party.”
