Kolkata Rape Victim’s Father Criticizes Mamata Banerjee: ‘Why the Duplicity?’

The father of the trainee doctor, who was tragically raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has publicly criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He accused her of adopting a double standard in addressing the horrifying incident that claimed his daughter’s life last week.

Speaking at a press conference in Kolkata on Sunday, the grief-stricken father expressed his dismay over the Bengal government’s actions. He said, “The Chief Minister walks the streets demanding justice for my daughter, yet simultaneously, she tries to suppress the public’s anger. Why is there such duplicity? Is she afraid of the people? We deserve answers.”

Statewide Protests Suppressed

The 31-year-old trainee doctor was found dead with multiple injuries on her body on August 9. Since then, protests have erupted across the state, demanding justice for the victim. However, the victim’s father claimed that the Bengal government is actively obstructing the statewide movement seeking justice for his daughter.

“Those protesting are finding their voices stifled by the Chief Minister. While she herself participates in protests, she is also ensuring that others’ demonstrations are curtailed,” he alleged.

A Mother’s Heartfelt Plea

Meanwhile, the victim’s mother made an emotional appeal to the people of West Bengal, particularly those benefiting from government schemes like Kanyashree and Lakshmi Bhandar. She urged them to reconsider their safety before accepting such benefits, highlighting the risks they might be unknowingly taking.

In her plea for justice, the mother reiterated her demand for the harshest punishment for those responsible. She made it clear that only after justice is served would she consider accepting financial compensation from the state government.

“I demand the strictest punishment for those involved. Only then will I contemplate the issue of financial compensation from the state government. Justice must come first, and only then will I accept any form of compensation,” she asserted.

Prohibitory Orders Imposed

Hours after the victim’s father spoke out, Kolkata Police imposed prohibitory orders near the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, banning meetings and the assembly of more than five persons.

The hospital has become the epicenter of the agitation following the tragic incident. To maintain law and order, Kolkata Police has enforced Section 163(2) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita around the hospital premises. The prohibitory orders extend from the hospital’s vicinity to the Shyambazar five-point crossing.

As the state continues to grapple with the aftermath of this brutal crime, the victim’s family remains steadfast in their demand for justice, calling on the government to take swift and decisive action against the perpetrators.
