‘Hindu Lives Matter’: Houston Rally Protests Bangladesh Violence
On August 11, 2024, over 300 Indian Americans and Bangladeshi-origin Hindus rallied in Houston, Texas, to protest escalating violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. The peaceful demonstration aimed to urge the Biden administration to take decisive action in response to the worsening situation following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ouster.
Context of the Rally
The rally was organized by the Global Voice for Bangladesh Minorities. Demonstrators voiced their outrage over a surge in violence against Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh. This unrest follows Sheikh Hasina’s sudden resignation on August 5, 2024, which ended her 15-year autocratic rule. Reports indicate that her departure has triggered a series of attacks on Hindu households, temples, and businesses.
Achlesh Amar, representing Vishwa Hindu Parishad and HinduAction, condemned the violence, stating, “We strongly condemn the assault on the Hindu community for their pluralistic beliefs. We demand immediate action from the Bangladeshi government to bring the perpetrators to justice.”
Call for Action
Protesters carried signs with messages such as ‘Stop Hindu Genocide’ and ‘Hindu Lives Matter’. Deepti Mahajan, co-convener of HinduPACT, described the situation as a “ticking bomb of genocide,” citing reports of torture, killings, and the burning of Hindu temples. She emphasized the urgency of international intervention.
A Bangladeshi-origin American woman shared her distress, saying, “So many innocent lives have been lost! Places of worship have been burned or vandalized, and women have been horrifically abused.”
International Concern
The rally highlighted growing international concern over the violence in Bangladesh. The caretaker government, led by Muhammad Yunus, has promised to address the “heinous attacks” on religious minorities.
Significance of the Hindu Minority
Hindus, who form the largest minority faith in predominantly Muslim Bangladesh, have traditionally supported Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League party. This support base is now facing severe threats, raising alarms about potential widespread violence.
The Houston protest underscores a significant international response to the crisis in Bangladesh, emphasizing the need for global action to protect vulnerable communities and uphold human rights.
