Hardik Pandya and Abhishek Nayar shared a heartfelt moment as Team India departed for Sri Lanka from Mumbai. The Indian T20I squad, set to compete in a 3-match series against Sri Lanka, left on July 22. This tour marks the beginning of a new chapter under the leadership of newly appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir.
Hardik Pandya, who joined the team for the T20I series, was seen sharing a light-hearted interaction with assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, embracing him warmly before the flight. Pandya, known for his all-round capabilities, will be participating in the series solely as a player. Recently, Shubman Gill replaced him as the vice-captain, a decision influenced by Pandya’s fitness challenges.
Ajit Agarkar, BCCI’s chairman of selectors, explained the decision, emphasizing Pandya’s importance to the team despite his recent fitness issues. “Regarding Hardik, he’s still a very important player for us. Fitness has obviously been a challenge for him. We want someone who is available more often than not,” Agarkar stated. This adjustment aims to manage Pandya better and ensure his contribution with both bat and ball.
The team, led by Suryakumar Yadav in the T20I series, will play three matches scheduled for July 27, 28, and 30 in Pallekele. Yadav’s appointment as captain reflects the selectors’ confidence in his leadership qualities and strategic acumen.
India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir, alongside assistant coaches Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate, is focused on preparing the team for the challenging series ahead. Gambhir’s first press conference highlighted his commitment to developing a strong, cohesive unit capable of excelling in all formats of the game.
Fans eagerly await the start of the series, hopeful that the Indian team will display exceptional performance and secure victories in Sri Lanka.
