Aakhir Tak – In Depth
A police case has been registered in Kerala’s Kannur district after a Plus One student (equivalent to Class 11) alleged that he was a victim of ragging. The Kolavallur police reported that Muhammed Nihal, a student at Kolavallur PR Memorial School, claimed his hand was broken following an assault.
The police have registered an FIR against five students from the same district. The charges include rioting with a deadly weapon, wrongfully restraining another person, voluntarily causing hurt, and unlawful assembly, all under various sections of the Bharat Nyay Samhita. The incident highlights the continued issue of violence in educational institutions.
According to the complaint filed, Nihal’s hand was broken in an attack initiated by five senior students. The motive behind the assault was the accusation that Nihal wasn’t showing sufficient respect to his seniors. The complaint details that the senior students ambushed Nihal as a group and proceeded to thrash him. The extent of his injuries required him to be admitted to Thalassery Cooperative Hospital for treatment.
The new case was reported only two days after five third-year students from a nursing college in Kottayam were arrested for the brutal torture of first-year students in the name of ragging. The police revealed that the complaint filed by the student indicated that the ragging began in November 2024, highlighting the prolonged nature of the abuse.
A disturbing video of one of the ragging sessions has surfaced, depicting the torture inflicted on a student. The video has sparked outrage and calls for stricter measures to prevent Ragging.
Meanwhile, the Opposition has alleged that the accused in the case have connections to the Students Federation of India, the student wing of the ruling Left party. These allegations have added a political dimension to the issue, increasing scrutiny of the handling of such cases.
